MEET CRYSTAL RENTERIA
CRYSTAL WAS KIND ENOUGH TO OPEN UP WITH WOMXNITE ABOUT HER FAMILY’S BACKGROUND, WHAT IT WAS LIKE NAVIGATING COLLEGE AS A FIRST-GENERATION STUDENT, AND HOW SHE FOUND HER JOB BY TRUSTING HER GUT AND LOOKING AT HER HOBBIES.
CRYSTAL COMES FROM A FAMILY THAT IMMIGRATED TO THE US. HER MOM WAS A SINGLE TEEN MOM WHO DID NOT HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMPLETE HER HIGH-SCHOOL EDUCATION.
CRYSTAL TELLS US, “SHE IMMIGRATED TO THE STATES WHEN SHE WAS A LITTLE GIRL WITH MY GRANDPARENTS. MY STEP-DAD, WHO RAISED ME SINCE I WAS FIVE, WAS BORN IN THE STATES. HE WAS IN THE GANG LIFE AND WAS IN AND OUT OF JAIL UNTIL HE MET MY MOM. HIS HIGHEST EDUCATION LEVEL IS 8TH GRADE. PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST INTELLIGENT PERSONS I HAVE EVER MET.”
WE ASKED HER WHAT ONE OF THE BEST DECISIONS SHE’S EVER MADE WAS:
“THE BEST DECISION I MADE WAS TURNING DOWN MY FIRST POST GRAD JOB OFFER BECAUSE IT WASN’T THE RIGHT FIT EVEN THOUGH THE MONEY WAS RIGHT. I TRUSTED MY GUT AND CONTINUED TO FIND THE CAREER OF MY DREAMS. I LOVE ENTERTAINMENT. I HAD A MENTOR TOWARDS THE END OF COLLEGE. I WAS REALLY UPSET ABOUT NOT GETTING AN OFFER FROM THIS AEROSPACE COMPANY…MY MENTOR ASKED ME IF I WAS UPSET THAT I WASN’T GOING TO WORK FOR THAT COMPANY OR THE FACT THEY SAID NO. I REALIZED I DIDN’T WANT TO GO INTO THAT INDUSTRY AND HE SUGGESTED FOR ME TO LOOK INTO INDUSTRIES BASED ON MY HOBBIES. FROM THERE I FOUND WORLD OF POSSIBILITIES FOR ME. I WORK AT PARAMOUNT PICTURES IN THE THEATRICAL MARKETING FINANCE DEPARTMENT.”
WOMXNITE ASKED CRYSTAL WHAT HER BIGGEST CHALLENGE WAS IN GETTING TO WHERE SHE IS NOW:
“IT WAS TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY, THERE ARE LITTLE TO NO HISPANIC WOMEN IN ENTERTAINMENT FINANCE. I HAD TO WORK TWICE AS HARD TO EVEN GET MY RESUME LOOKED AT.”
WHAT SKILLS DID YOU HAVE TO LEARN AND GAIN THAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOU NEEDED?
“IT’S SILLY TO SAY NOW BUT I LEARNED TO SPEAK UP AND ASK FOR HELP. A SKILL IS LEARNED AND TO LEARN YOU HAVE TO SEEK FOR IT.”
WAS NAVIGATING COLLEGE AS A FIRST-GENERATION STUDENT DIFFICULT?
“EXTREMELY DIFFICULT! IT WAS HARD; FROM FILING FOR FINANCIAL AID TO CHOOSING THE RIGHT CLASSES. IT WAS A LOT OF TRIAL AND ERROR.”
DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS OF WHAT RESOURCES TO TAKE LOOK AT IF A PERSON IS INTERESTED IN DOING SOMETHING SIMILAR TO WHAT YOU ARE DOING?
“CONNECT WITH SOMEONE ON LINKEDIN THAT WORKS FOR THE COMPANY AND POSITION YOU ARE INTERESTED IN OR HOPE TO ACHIEVE ONE DAY. GET TO KNOW THEM AND LEARN HOW THEY GOT THERE. INVITE THEM OUT TO GET A CUP OF COFFEE AND HAVE A CONVERSATION.”
WHAT ADVISE DO YOU WISH YOU WOULD HAVE LISTENED TO GROWING UP?
“TO NOT GIVE POWER TO PEOPLE THAT MAKE YOU FEEL LESS THAN WHAT YOU ARE. IT TOOK A WHILE FOR ME TO GET TO THAT POINT WHERE I WAS CONFIDENT IN MYSELF. IT WOULD HAVE SAVED ME SO MUCH TIME NOT CARING WHAT PEOPLE THOUGHT.”
