Meet Rachel Overvoll

RACHEL OVERVOLL

RACHEL INSPIRED US AFTER LEARNING HOW SHE BROKE FREE FROM WHAT SHE HAD KNOWN HER ENTIRE LIFE. GROWING UP IN FUNDAMENTALIST EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANITY , ENGAGED AT A YOUNG AGE TO AN ABUSIVE PARTNER, WHILST FIGHTING DEPRESSION AND OVERCOMING THE TRAUMA OF SEXUAL ASSAULT, RACHEL ROSE ABOVE IT ALL IN THE MOST GRACEFUL MANNER.

SHE TOOK HER EXPERIENCES AND PUT THE PEN TO PAPER, WRITING AND BECOMING THE AUTHOR OF FINDING FEMINISM, WITH THE HOPE OF TOUCHING LIVES. HER MISSION TO HELP WOMEN FIND THEIR VOICE AND REMEMBER THE STRENGTH THEY HOLD MOVED US.

RACHEL WAS KIND ENOUGH TO BE OPEN AND COURAGEOUS WITH WOMXNITE.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

I GREW UP IN INDIANA IN A FUNDAMENTALIST RELIGIOUS COMMUNITY. WHEN I WAS ABOUT 20 YEARS OLD, I ENDED MY ENGAGEMENT TO AN ABUSIVE MALE LEADER IN THE CHURCH COMMUNITY AND DECIDED TO LISTEN TO MY HEART AND LEAVE THE PATRIARCHAL RELIGION WHICH HAD INDOCTRINATED ME. THROUGH THIS I HAVE REALLY FOUND MY VOICE AND MY INDEPENDENCE IN MAGICAL WAYS!

IF YOU COULD GIVE ADVICE TO YOUR YOUNGER, THIRTEEN YEAR OLD SELF, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?

YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL AND SO STRONG. REMEMBER YOUR STRENGTH AND LISTEN TO YOUR VOICE OF SURVIVAL.

WHAT DO YOU FOR FOR A LIVING? IS THIS WHAT YOU THOUGHT YOU WOULD BE DOING 5-10 YEARS AGO?

I AM CURRENTLY IN EDUCATION SALES FOR A TECHNOLOGY COMPANY, BUT I AM ALSO AN AUTHOR!

MY MEMOIR, TITLED FINDING FEMINISM, WAS JUST PUBLISHED BY PEACOCK PRESS. IT IS AVAILABLE IN DENVER BOOK STORES OR ON AMAZON. IF SOMEONE WOULD HAVE TOLD ME 10 OR EVEN 5 YEARS AGO THAT I WOULD BE A PUBLISHED AUTHOR IN 2019, I WOULD HAVE LAUGHED AT THEM.

HAVE YOU FOUND YOUR PASSION IN LIFE? IF SO, WHAT IS IT?

YES! MY PASSION IS SPEAKING TO WOMEN. SHARING MY STORY AND VULNERABILITY WITH WOMEN SO THAT WE ALL CAN GROW INTO OUR STRONGEST SELF TOGETHER.

WHAT EVENT OR MOMENT OCCURRED THAT LED YOU TOWARDS YOUR PASSION? SO I BEGAN WRITING MY BOOK ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO, BUT MOSTLY AS THERAPY HOMEWORK FROM MY THERAPIST. I HAD IDEAS TO WRITE A BOOK BUT IT WAS ALWAYS A “ONE DAY I WILL….”, THING.

LAST MAY HOWEVER, MY FRIEND SUDDENLY PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 30. THIS DEATH AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE WAS A REMINDER OF HOW OUR DAYS ARE NOT GUARANTEED, AND THAT I NEEDED TO MAKE MY BOOK A “NO OR ELSE” PROJECT.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ANYONE TRYING TO PURSUE A SIMILAR CAREER PATH?

THESE ARE MY 3 KEY PIECES OF ADVICE FOR WOMEN WHO EITHER WANT TO WRITE OR WHO WANT TO PURSUE THEIR DREAMS WHILE WORKING FULL TIME.

1.      DECIDE WHAT YOUR GOAL IS AND MAKE A TIME LINED PLAN! THERE WILL ALWAYS BE AN EXCUSE FOR YOU TO PUSH YOUR PASSIONS TO THE SIDE – “WHEN I HAVE MORE MONEY…MORE TIME…MORE SUPPORT…A BIGGER FOLLOWING”. STOP SAYING WHEN AND START SAYING NOW!

2.      BE YOURSELF 100%. AUTHENTICITY WILL DRAW PEOPLE TO YOUR STORY. IT WILL DRAW THEM TO YOUR PASSION. IT WILL MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL.

3.      IF YOU ARE DIVING INTO A BIG PROJECT, DECIDE WHO YOU WILL SHARE YOUR GOALS WITH! FRIENDS, PARTNERS, PARENTS, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SOMEONE WHO WILL NOT SUPPORT YOU. DO NOT SHARE YOUR DREAMS AND GOALS WITH THEM! SHARE YOUR DREAMS AND GOALS WITH YOUR TEAM, YOUR TRIBE!

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS ONE KEY ELEMENT, ACTION, ETC., THAT HELPED TO GET YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

THIS MAY BE CLICHÉ BUT HARD WORK. WRITING A BOOK WHILE WORKING 50 TO 60 HOURS A WEEK FOR MY FULL TIME JOB TURNED MY WEEKS INTO 65 TO 75 HOUR WORK WEEKS. IT WAS HARD. I CRIED. I ALMOST GAVE UP, BUT I HAVE A VERY HARD WORK ETHIC AND AN EXTREME DETERMINATION THAT PUSHED ME THROUGH.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED FROM A PAST EXPERIENCE THAT YOU CARRY WITH YOU?

SHED ANYTHING AND ANYONE IN YOUR LIFE WHO DOES NOT SERVE YOU. IF YOU ARE IN A RELATIONSHIP, IN A SITUATION, IN A FRIENDSHIP, IN A JOB, THAT DOES NOT ALLOW YOU TO BE AUTHENTICALLY YOURSELF, GET IT OUT OF YOUR LIFE!!

WHAT WOMEN (OR MEN) INSPIRE YOU? WHY?

MY BIGGEST INSPIRATIONS ARE JESSICA VALENTI AND ROXANNE GAY. THESE WOMEN ARE FEMINIST CHAMPIONS AND BRILLIANT AUTHORS WHO INSPIRE ME WITH THEIR WORK AND DEDICATION TO EQUALITY.

DID YOU PURSE A HIGHER EDUCATION? WHY OR WHY NOT? IF SO, WHAT SCHOOL DID YOUATTEND AND WHAT WAS YOUR DEGREE?

I DID! I WENT TO INDIANA UNIVERSITY AND RECEIVED MY B.S. IN HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM MANAGEMENT. EVEN THOUGH THIS IS NOT AT ALL WHAT I AM DOING FOR MY CAREER, I AM SO GRATEFUL THAT I HAVE THIS DEGREE WHICH I WORKED SO HARD TO RECEIVE.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE TO YOU? IS YOUR IDEA OF SUCCESS DIFFERENT FROM A PREVIOUS VERSION?

WHEN I STARTED WRITING “FINDING FEMINISM”, MY PUBLISHER ASKED ME, “HOW WILL YOU MEASURE YOUR SUCCESS?” THIS QUESTION DAUNTED ME FOR A MOMENT. HOW WAS I GOING TO MEASURE MY SUCCESS? BOOKS SOLD? MONEY MADE? SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS BOOKED? WHAT WAS MY POINT OF SUCCESS?

I SAT BACK AND THOUGHT ABOUT THIS QUESTION FOR A MOMENT BEFORE RESPONDING, “MY SUCCESS IS GOING TO BE MEASURED IN THE LIVES I TOUCH. IF I TOUCH ONE WOMAN OR MAN’S LIFE THEN THIS BOOK IS A SUCCESS.”

I WROTE MY STORY BECAUSE I BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF VULNERABILITY AND I BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF VULNERABILITY TO UNITE PEOPLE. WHEN WRITING, I HOPED THAT MY STORY WOULD TOUCH LIVES AND I KNEW THE ONLY WAY TO DO THAT WAS TO WRITE WITH COMPLETE ABANDON AND COMPLETE OPENNESS. THE MESSAGES FROM MEN AND WOMEN, FRIENDS, AND STRANGERS, OVER THE LAST MONTH HAS PROVED TO ME THAT MY BOOK IS A SUCCESS. I’VE CHANGED LIVES.

WHAT HOPE DO YOU HAVE FOR THE FUTURE?

EQUALITY. I HOPE THAT IN MY LIFETIME, I WILL SEE ALL WOMEN (LGBTQ AND WOMEN OF COLOR INCLUDED) EXPERIENCE A GREATER SENSE OF EQUALITY IN SOCIETY.

LASTLY, WHAT IS ONE QUOTE YOU LIVE BY?

“THE MOMENT YOU CHANGE YOUR PERCEPTION IS THE MOMENT YOU REWRITE THE CHEMISTRY OF YOUR BODY.” - DR. BRUCE LIPTON
