WHAT WOMEN (OR MEN) INSPIRE YOU? WHY?

MY BIGGEST INSPIRATION IS MY MOTHER. EVERY DAY I AM INSPIRED BY MY MOTHER’S ENDLESS KINDNESS & LOVING HEART, HER PERSEVERANCE, AND OF COURSE HER WORK ETHIC.

I AM ALSO INSPIRED BY THE MANY DIFFERENT ROLE MODELS IN MY LIFE. THE WOMEN WHO HAVE FOLLOWED THEIR DREAMS, HAVE STAYED GROUNDED, AND HAVE WORKED HARD TO CREATE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE; WOMEN LIKE SHANNON GAULDING, QUINN CUMMINGS, AVA DUVERNAY, YESIKA SALGADO, TANYA SARACHO, GLORIA CALDERON-KELLETT, & GINA RODRIGUEZ.

DID YOU PURSE A HIGHER EDUCATION?

WHY OR WHY NOT? IF SO, WHAT SCHOOL DID YOU ATTEND AND WHAT WAS YOUR DEGREE?

I GRADUATED FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY WITH DEGREES IN RHETORIC AND CHICANA/O STUDIES, AND GRADUATED FROM UCLA'S SCHOOL OF THEATRE FILM & TELEVISION'S CREATIVE PRODUCING PROGRAM.

WHAT DO YOU FOR A LIVING? IS IT WHAT YOU THOUGHT YOU WOULD BE DOING 5-10 YEARS AGO?

I AM A FILMMAKER WORKING IN FILM & TV DEVELOPMENT.

FILM-MAKING WAS BEEN MY PASSION SINCE I WAS A LITTLE GIRL & ALWAYS KNEW I WOULD END UP WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY.

AS AN LA NATIVE BORN AND RAISED IN HOLLYWOOD, I GREW UP AROUND THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY MY ENTIRE LIFE. IN ELEMENTARY I FELL IN LOVE WITH MUSICAL THEATRE; I WAS A MEMBER OF THE INTERNATIONAL THESPIAN SOCIETY, ATTENDED SHAKESPEARE CAMP AND WAS IN THEATRE THROUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL. AT THE AGE OF 18, I FELL IN LOVE WITH FILM AUTEUR WHEN I BECAME INVOLVED IN THE AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE'S (AFI) FILM FESTIVAL. I THEN BEGAN WORKING AS A PA AND A PROP MASTER ON VARIOUS FILM SETS BEFORE GOING TO COLLEGE, AND KNEW THAT AS SOON AS I GRADUATED I WOULD MOVE BACK TO LA AND PURSUE MY CAREER IN ENTERTAINMENT.

HAVE YOU FOUND YOUR PASSION IN LIFE? IF SO, WHAT IS IT?

FILM MAKING & UPLIFTING MY COMMUNITY. I WANT TO CREATE FILMS THAT ARE SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS BUT ALSO CREATE CHANGE IN THE WORLD. FILMS THAT INSPIRE OTHERS TO FIGHT FOR JUSTICE, EQUITY, AND EQUALITY. I WANT TO DO THIS WHILE ALSO MAKING SURE THAT I AM UPLIFTING THE COMMUNITIES I AM A PART OF EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.

WHAT EVENT OR MOMENT OCCURRED THAT LED YOU TOWARDS YOUR PASSION?

WATCHING SALT OF THE EARTH. SALT OF THE EARTH IS A 1954 FILM CREATED BY BLACKLISTED FILMMAKERS WHICH HIGHLIGHTS A LABOR STRUGGLE FACED BY ZINC WORKERS AND IS CENTERED AROUND A MEXICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY. IT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST FILMS TO EVER ADDRESS SOCIAL JUSTICE ISSUES SUCH AS: LABOR RIGHTS, FEMINISM, & RACISM. RELEASED IN 1954, IT WAS A FILM SO AHEAD OF ITS TIME AND SO PROGRESSIVE AND INSPIRATIONAL TO YOUNG FILMMAKERS.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS ONE KEY ELEMENT OR EVENT THAT HELPED TO GET YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

FROM MY MOM TO MY SISTER TO MY TIAS, MY BEST FRIENDS GROWING UP CINELA AZIZ, UCLA & GEORGE WASHINGTON LAW SCHOOL ALUMN, NOW LAWYER. AND KATHY SERRANO, UCSB ALUMN, NOW MOTHER & WORKING-PROFESSIONAL - TO MY HERMANAS FROM HERMANAS UNIDAS FROM THE UC BERKELEY CHAPTER. WOMEN HAVE SUPPORTED, EMPOWERED, AND UPLIFTED ME EVERY STEP OF THE WAY, AND I HOPE TO DO THE SAME FOR THEM AND MANY OTHERS.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE TO YOU? IS YOUR IDEA OF SUCCESS DIFFERENT FROM A PREVIOUS VERSION?

TO ME, SUCCESS IS BEING ABLE TO SEE THE DIFFERENCES IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS THAT YOU'VE MADE.

DO YOU HAVE ANY FAILURES, WHICH IN RETROSPECT, TURNED OUT TO BE LEADING YOU TOWARDS A BETTER DIRECTION?

WHENEVER I DIDN'T RECEIVE AN INTERNSHIP, A JOB, A SCHOLARSHIP, OR AN OPPORTUNITY I FELT I SHOULD HAVE DESERVED OR FELT I WORKED INCREDIBLY HARD FOR, I FELT LIKE THEY WERE FAILURES. BUT THROUGHOUT THE YEARS I'VE REALIZED THAT EVERY DECISION, EVERY FAILURE, EVERY OUTCOME HAS BEEN A GIFT FROM GOD. GUIDANCE FROM A HIGHER-POWER. OR A NUDGE FROM THE WORLD IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

WHAT IS A QUOTE YOU LIVE BY?

"GIVING TO OTHERS, IS A GIFT TO OURSELVES"

IF YOU COULD GIVE ADVICE TO YOUR YOUNGER, THIRTEEN YEAR OLD SELF, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?

LOVE YOUR PARENTS, LOVE YOUR SIBLINGS, LOVE YOUR COMMUNITY, AND EMBRACE EVERY PART OF WHO YOU ARE - BECAUSE THERE IS ONLY ONE YOU - AND SHE IS INCREDIBLE!
